Literacy in India is a big issue and it is great to know that India is making all attempts to get as many people educated as possible. Educating the women every household, ensures that the whole household, or at least the next generation coming up is sure to get literate. The Govt is launching Saakshar Bharat, which aims to make 70 million adults (60 million being women) literate in three years. This will be implemented in 365 of the country’s 619 districts.
That’s a huge task and to make it more effective, the Govt is planning to rope in some of the powerful women of India as brand ambassadors. Priyanka Vadra, daughter of Congress president Sonia Gandhi; Nita Ambani, wife of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani and co-owner of Mumbai Indians; Supriya Sule, MP and daughter of agriculture minister Sharad Pawar; and M. Kanimozhi, MP and daughter of Tamil Nadu chief minister M. Karunanidhi are the women which the Govt wants as ambassadors to promote this huge task of literacy undertaken.
A great thought and if it works out would be great too. Remember the eye donation campaign where they roped in Aishwarya Rai? Till date, it is touted to be the most successful campaign ever. We only hope that with Saakshar Bharat, having the power of four, would be an even bigger success.
